Gosforth Housing Need Survey 2008

Gosforth Parish Housing Needs Survey May 2008

Key Findings

The Survey

Six hundred and fifty-three survey forms were posted to the householders and businesses of the parish of Gosforth (100%), with a return date of 23rd May 2008.  Two hundred and thirty-six householders returned their completed forms.  This is a return rate of 36.14% which is above the average 30.78% return rate for this type of survey in Cumbria since 2003 and the national average of 35%.

The 2001 Census information for Gosforth Parish shows that there were twenty-eight (4.64%) second homes or holiday homes in the area and that there were seventeen (2.82%) vacant household spaces.  These figures may have increased in the past seven years, and these households are unlikely to have responded to the survey.

Of the returned forms, forty (16.95%) responded saying that either the whole family or someone living in the household needed to move, within the parish, in the next five years.  This will be analysed further in this report.  According to surveys completed by Cumbria Rural Housing Trust since 2003, an average of 17.95% of completed forms identified a local housing need.

This report details the information derived from these forty survey responses who expressed a need to move.  One of the households indicated that they are on the Local Authority and / or a Housing Association waiting list.

Housing Need

Of the forty households indicating a housing need, we consider that seventeen are in need of affordable housing within the Gosforth Parish.

We consider that the remaining twenty-three do not fit the criteria of being in genuine housing need.
