Sedbergh February 2007

The Survey

We posted out 1386 survey forms to the households and businesses of Sedbergh Parish (100%).  437 households returned their completed forms.   This is a return rate of 31.53% which is above the average 28.79% return rate for this type of survey in Cumbria since 2003.  There are a number of properties used as second homes and holiday lets in the parish – 13.2% in the 2001 census, but this is likely to have increased in the past 6 years – which are unlikely to respond to the survey.  Therefore the response rate of 31.53% is good.  The national average is 35%.

Of the returned forms, 89 (20.37%) responded, saying that either the whole household or someone living in the household

needs to move, within the parish, in the next 5 years.  This will be analysed further in the conclusion to this report.  In

Cumbria since 2003 on average 19.67% of returned survey forms, completed by Cumbria Rural Housing Trust, have

identified a local housing need.

This brief report details the information derived from these 89 survey responses who expressed a need. 14 of the households

are on the Local Authority or Housing Association register or waiting list.

Housing Need

1.  Of the 89 households indicating a housing need, we consider that 37 are in need of affordable housing within

the Sedbergh Parish area.

                                             11     Now

                                              7     Within 12 months

                                              6     Within 3 years

                                            13      Within 5 years

Of these, 1 household is eligible for housing in Sedbergh parish, but has indicated that they would prefer to be housed where they work, where they would also be eligible for affordable housing.

We consider that the remaining 52 do not fit the criteria of being in affordable housing need in the parish.
